A modernized interpretation of the Strength Tarot Card! by Artist Sweet Honey

About the Card & the Art

The Strength card sits in position 8, often stylized with roman numerals VIII. Its original association word was “Fortitude”. My illustration is based off the original Rider-Waite illustration drawn by queer artist Pamela Colman Smith in 1908 and first published between 1909-1910.

The Strength card features a crowned figure dressed in white robes with a lush crown and an infinity symbol above their head, symbolising their enlightenment, purity of spirit, fortitude and infinite potential. In the foreground, we notice they have tamed a Lion: representative of our passions, raw energies, and wild nature. They’ve used not force or coercion to tame these impulses; it is their love and wisdom that has tamed the beast. However, its important to note the Lion still roars; remaining ever on guard and stepped out of frame to symbolise our need to test boundaries, protect ourselves, defend those with less strength, and break molds when needed.

This imagery and meaning of this card speaks to our inner strength and tenacity of our spirit. It is the archetypal symbol for our human nature to Rise: over, and over, and over again: shown here with the rising sun breaking over the rockiness of life’s path below. The inclusion of lush greenery in both their crown and at the base of the mountains speaks to the our wild nature and our miraculous ability to persevere.

This illustration is available in my signature 11x17” poster print, or a smaller 8x10 inch version.
